More About Decode

This Google docs add-on can be used to store password protected text in the document. It is useful for protecting passwords and other sensitive information in a document.

Any text that need to be protected must be encrypted and replaced with code text before ending the Googledoc session. Otherwise, the original text will be in the revision history. (If you need to erase the revision history, you will need to make a copy of the file and erase the original file.)

To launch the add-on click Add-ons > Decode > Start from the menu bar of the Google doc. The add-on's user interface will appear on the side of the document.

Encrypting text: Select text from the Google doc, enter a password in the Password text box, and click Encrypt button. Encrypted text will appear in the Encrypted/Decrypted text-box in the user interface after a few seconds. The text selected in the document may be replaced with this text by clicking the Insert button.

Decrypting text: Select (encrypted) text from the Google doc, enter the password -- the one used for the encryption -- in the Password text box, and click Decrypt button. Decrypted text will appear in the Encrypted/Decrypted text-box in the user interface after a few seconds. The text selected in the document may be replaced with this text by clicking the Replace button.

To ensure that the correct password was used for encrypting text, try decrypting the encrypted text after *retyping* the password. You may use different passwords for each Encrypt action. Ensure that the password(s) is one you will remember and is entered correctly. The password is not stored anywhere else other than in the code text and cannot be reset.

Add-ons do not work on mobile devices. If you want to encrypt or decrypt text on mobile devices, copy and paste this link in your document to use a web-based tool compatible with this add-on: http://htmlpreview.github.io/?https://github.com/msyamlal/sjcl/blob/decode/demo/index.html.
